Your Stuff & Natural Disasters n’Ish

Hurricaine Ivan

You know-

Almost the entire Eastern Seaboard experienced an earthquake (or something…) on Tuesday and now we are slated for a nasty rumble tumble with a Hurricane named Irene (this is actually a picture of Ivan).  I am not sure how serious the weather event will be BUT NYC is gearing up to shut down its entire transit system. Something that I don’t think has ever happened.  That said, if this storm turns out to be a complete cluster fuck of destruction-make sure that you have your papers in order and in a secure, safe and easy to grab place.

Some things to consider:

  • Now is the time to find all of your important documents (financials, house titles, business papers, insurance policies etc) and other important stuff and organize them in one easy to find (and grab place).
  • If you have time- scan stuff to a jump drive, back up your computers & cell phones, organize your passwords,
  • Review your homeowner’s/renter’s insurance policies,
  • Pay your premiums if you have not done so and they are due
  • Know how much your deductible is
  • Itemize your valuables (pictures- video, list)

Put all this stuff in a safe place or better yet, email it to yourself and upload it to a digital storage cloud that is safe and secure. In the event that you do experience a property loss due to the storm, you will not have to worry about recreating all of your records. Everything already exist and you can speed up the insurance claims process.

Other things to do for your comfort:

  • Put some gas in your car
  • Find your flash-lights and get some new batteries
  • Collaborate with your neighbors to share resources
  • Charge your devices to full capacity
  • If you have a cordless phone- make sure you get a regular basic cord phone. Your cordless won’t work if there is no electricity
  • Purify a good supply of water (if you live in DC- you should be doing this anyway- our water is NOT to be trusted)
  • We know that Verizon will be on fail mode so go to the library and get some good books

Any other tips? Post them below.
